A PAIR OF SHIBAYAMA IVORY OKIMONO, Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

h. max. 33.5 cm
Composed of two elephants finely inlaid in the Shibayama technique richly harnessed and adorned. One with its trunk lowered, the other with its trunk raised.
Both wear the howdah blanket and harness finely inlaid with mother-of-pearl, aogai, tortoiseshell and other semi-precious stones. A lotus-shaped saddle is mounted on the back.
