A DUAN INK STONE, China, Qing dynasty, 18th century

The front is carved in relief with a hole for holding water, surrounded by a bat carrying a medallion with edges adorned with key-fret patterns. The stone's border is shaped and intricately carved with interwoven cords and rings. The reverse is magnificently carved with scholar’s objects, fruits, birds, antique artifacts, rocks, bamboo, and clouds. It rests on its wooden stand.
