A LARGE AND IMPORTANT 'EIGHT HORSES' PAINTING ON SILK SIGNED BY QIAN FENG, China, Qianlong period, dated 1771

Magnificently painted with eight horses by a riverbank surrounded by lush trees, rocks, and mountains. It bears an inscription and a seal with the cyclical date xin mao (辛卯), corresponding to the year 1771, and the signature of the artist Qian Feng (钱沣).

Provenance: from a private collection, Rome.

Catalogue notes:

Qian Feng (1740–1795) was a prominent figure of the Qing dynasty who served as an official, poet, calligrapher, and painter.
Born in Kunming (Yunnan) in 1740, he earned his degree in 1771 and served as an Imperial Censor until his death in 1795. He was renowned for his moral integrity.
As a painter, he particularly excelled in depictions of horses and naturalistic subjects. The present painting is an outstanding example of his work.
