The sculpture can be related to the colossal statue of Saint Charles in Arona, executed by Siro Zanelli, assisted by Bernardo Falconi, based on a design by the painter Giovan Battista Crespi, known as il Cerano (see A. Casati, Siro Zanelli: “scultore di marmo et intagliator di legnio” tra tradizione e rinnovamento, in Scultura lignea e policroma in Lombardia tra Sei e Settecento, 2021, pp. 33-57). Zanelli was the principal sculptor of the Borromeo family.
