A refined portable scientific instrument comprising a square brass base finely engraved with leaf-scroll motifs. Set at the centre of the base is a magnetic compass with a silver-plated face, bearing the cardinal points in Latin (Septentrio, Oriens, Meridies, Occidens) and an indication of magnetic declination. The magnetic needle is made of blued steel.
