PAIR OF RARE MARBLE PUTTI CANDLEHOLDERS, Roman workshop, 17th/18th century
h cm 80
Pair of marble sculptures depicting two winged putti seated on clouds in opposing, mirrored poses. The figures, characterized by a dynamic anatomical rendering typical of the Baroque taste, support with both arms a candelabrum-form element surmounted by a capital decorated with fine polychrome marble inlays.
The drapery, partially enveloping the hips and cascading over the clouds beneath, is rendered with deep folds that enhance the chiaroscuro effect and the overall sense of movement.
