A RARE AND IMPORTANT PAIR OF IMPERIAL BLACK-GROUND BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN VASES, China, Qing dynasty, Guangxu period (1875-1908)

The baluster body, of flattened quadrilobate section, rises from a tapered, lobed foot to a wide flared and lobed mouth. Two central octagonal, petal-lobed medallions are painted in rich cobalt-blue tones with a dragon and its young contesting the flaming pearl. On the sides are two pairs of blue-and-white lion-head handles with rings held in the mouths. The ground is covered in a black glaze, except for the base, which bears a four-character underglaze blue mark, Qing Hua Zhen Pin (清华珍品).

本品为海棠尊形，器型硕大，胎质厚重，通体施墨彩，颈部塑双兽首衔环耳，腹部两侧开光，绘青花二龙戏珠纹饰，所绘龙形威武，身形矫健，鳞片历历，舞爪张牙，乘风弄瀚，浩气奔霓，极具皇家气韵，青花发色明艳深沉，底书“清华珍品”四字双行篆书款，为清晚期不可多得的官窑上乘佳作。
