A SILVER CUP AND A PHOTOGRAPH, China, early 20th century

The cup is worked in repoussé and chased with prunus blossoms and characters; it bears the inscription 盧永祥敬贈韋禮敦先生惠存 (“Respectfully presented by Lu Yongxiang for the esteemed remembrance of Mr Wei Lidun”); stamped on the base Qingyun Zhen (庆云斋). Weight: 1100 g.

Catalogue notes:

Lu Yongxiang was a warlord and general of the Anhui clique during the Beiyang period, and military governor of Zhejiang. Wei Lidun (Wilkinson) was a British diplomat in China, who served as consul and maintained close ties with military and political circles of the Beiyang era.
