Catalogue Note:

Famille rose porcelains with sgraffito grounds are characteristic of the Qing period. Their production flourished particularly between the mid-eighteenth century and the first quarter of the nineteenth century, with examples made both at the Imperial kilns and at provincial kilns, before experiencing a revival from the late nineteenth century through the period of the Republic of China.
The exceptional quality of the present decoration, together with the remarkable refinement of its manufacture, may suggest that, if not intended for the Imperial court itself, it was commissioned by a patron of considerable wealth and status.
Compare a porcelain candlestick with closely related decoration, dated to the Jiaqing period, preserved in the collection of the Shanghai Museum (link).
