°A BRONZE SCULPTURE DEPICTING “ALLEGORY OF THE THEATRE”, 1938 ca
h cm 43 x l cm 15 x p cm 13
Signed on the base a. biggi. the sculpture is a clear representation of the figure of classical tragedy, a woman dressed in ancient style with a peplos holding a mask in her right hand, a symbol of theatre. the work can be placed in the late 1930s of the 20th century, in the midst of a period of great artistic ferment, both in formal research—still in some cases influenced by various secessions and therefore by the art deco style—and in the idealism that guides it towards a return to classical tradition. there is an approach to antiquity driven by a poetic impulse, close to a lyricism arising from an intimate understanding of an ancient sensibility that transcends any era. there is an evident search for classical canons expressed in the composition of the face and in the other compositional elements of the sculpture.
