Catalogue Notes:

The present work belongs to the refined tradition of seventeenth-century artistic production in Trapani, a period during which local craftsmen distinguished themselves in the creation of precious devotional objects in ivory, coral and other materials, intended for both ecclesiastical and private patronage.

The composition, depicting the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, displays stylistic and iconographic characteristics consistent with seventeenth-century production. The arrangement of the figures on different levels, the central position of Christ radiating divine light, the dynamic treatment of the drapery and the sculptural rendering of the clouds recall the artistic language and theatrical sensibility characteristic of the Baroque period.

On the basis of these elements, our specialist considers a seventeenth-century date plausible, within the context of the production of the Trapani workshops, although the accompanying CITES certificate dates the work to the early nineteenth century.
